Are you afraid of your lawyer? Yes, afraid. Why would anyone be afraid of their lawyer?
Well a good lawyer is going to give it to you straight. He/she is going to tell you when you need to pull it together, get real and stop messing up your case. I don't mamby pamby my clients.
I level with my clients and they often fear (but respect) what I have to say.
I will tell you how the Judge will look at your behavior, your emails, your text messages and advise you to rethink your approach to your divorce if it is doing more harm than good.
I will not hold back when it comes to your communications, your child care, your case assessment and your litigation goals. I give clients the facts of life and force them to deal with reality.
And if you hold back with your lawyer, you are missing an opportunity to get the best possible advice. Don't hide the facts from your lawyer. Have a history of drinking, drugs, addiction or infidelity? Don't sugarcoat the truth. Sugarcoating the facts is overrated. Why sugarcoat the facts when it will only lead you astray and ultimately to disappointment and heartache?
Remember the Emperor With No Clothes? He would have been so much better off if his peeps would have leveled with him and told him he was butt naked.
A lawyer who tells you what you want to hear is not doing you any favors. A client who white washes the facts will only miss out on his/her lawyer's best advice. You want your lawyer to know everything because your spouse already knows and he/she will tell their lawyer.
If you want the best case you can possibly have, hire a lawyer who will tell you the good, the bad and the ugly. When you are going through a divorce, you need to know thyself and make sure thy lawyer knows everything about you. And it's okay to be afraid because the really good lawyers will tell you like it is and sometimes that's scary, but necessary, for a winning case.
